It’s become something of a cliché for companies to say ‘our greatest asset is our people’. At Hiscox, we don’t just say it, we live it, by making sure that we invest in and support this most important asset.

What makes our learning and development unique?

Our programme is designed to support you at every stage of your development, and you will be encouraged to take part in it throughout your career at Hiscox. And, of course, you’ll be working with and learning from some of the most intelligent, creative and courageous people in the insurance industry.

Our programme has five elements.

1. Induction
Always look for the training you will receive in your first 90 days at a company – this time is critical for you. Listening to new staff, we know that they want to become as effective as possible as quickly as possible. As a result we have developed personalised induction programmes that are built around your job and personal goals, in discussion with your line manager.

2. Technical learning
Currently, most of our technical training is about underwriting, the core of our business. Tapping into our wealth of in-house knowledge and expertise, Hiscox has created a world-class underwriting training programme which incorporates technical workshops run by market experts with online tutorials. This approach has been so successful for our underwriting team that we are developing similar programmes for claims and operations employees. Our support functions, IT, finance and HR attend professional seminars regularly.

3. Personal development
This comprehensive programme will equip you with the key skills of a Hiscox professional, from influencing and negotiation, to business planning and project management.

4. Professional qualifications
We will support you financially in studying for relevant professional qualifications.

5. Management and leadership
We run our own workshops for new managers to help you learn how to manage people effectively. For more advanced leadership and business strategy skills, we will send you on programmes run by some of the world’s leading business schools.
