Hiscox London office

Our people

We want to build teams that are as diverse as our customers and create a vibrant work environment where all employees can thrive.

Our values guide our business: to have courage and integrity, to provide quality products, to excel in the service we provide and, above all, to be human. We’re a business that cares about people and in our most recent employee survey, 94% of our employees said that they share our company values. We expect our people to behave in a way that reflects our values and to always do the right thing no matter how hard it might feel at the time. In return we offer competitive reward packages, training and guidance to build your career.

Building a diverse and inclusive culture

We’ve made important progress on diversity and inclusion (D&I) across the group. We have a dedicated D&I expert leading on this work, a set of KPIs for each of our business units, and established a nine-point plan to address gender imbalance at senior levels. Our employees now benefit from flexible working and enhanced maternity/paternity leave policies, and we completed a comprehensive pay gap analysis. To help support and retain women returning from maternity leave we have developed handbooks for employees and managers, and introduced a buddy system. We also sponsored the Dive In Festival for the fourth consecutive year.

Our focus on D&I as a strategic priority continues to be led at Board level as we broaden the scope of activities beyond gender, drive more specific and targeted action, and ensure D&I is firmly on the management agenda of each of our business units. We are currently rolling out unconscious bias training for all people managers across the Group, and extending our women in leadership training to more junior employees.

Our employee networks are flourishing

We’re empowering our people to come together across the group to share information and experiences, and support each other. From our global LGBT+ network to our Latino employees and Generation Hiscox in the US, our networks are employee-driven and are helping us create a truly inclusive environment. Our Women at Hiscox network focuses on mentoring, coaching, and collaboration, with a strong programme of events and successful speed networking sessions providing an opportunity for women to cultivate their professional networks. WeMind, our mental health and wellbeing network is helping us break the silence around mental health and rolling out awareness training across the UK with charity MIND, and our parents and caregivers networks are supporting our ‘return to work’ project for new parents.

We understand that people have lives outside of work

Whether you’re a parent or carer; want time for hobbies or improving your well-being; want to attend the school play or sports day; or just have a long commute from which you sometimes need a break. We’re all grown-ups here, so we manage our own time – we’re trusted to make it work around work. Hiscox also has a flexible working policy, which we want people to use – nearly all of our flexible working requests have been approved in full.

Rewards and benefits that help our employees plan for the future

Hiscox encourages employees to share in its success through performance-related pay, bonuses, savings-related share option schemes and executive performance share plans. We also offer competitive benefits packages, which contain health and fitness benefits and opportunities for flexible working and career breaks. Salary packages are bench-marked against the financial services industry as a whole and against the Lloyd’s market specifically (where applicable), and are also considered on a country-by-country basis. We also have a confidential employee assistance phone line that can offer support with personal and professional issues.

We offer sports club memberships as part of our benefits packages. And in some of our offices – such as London and York – there are also subsidised therapies on offer, including sports massage, acupuncture and osteopathy.

We’re a growing company, and our employees need to grow with us

The people that choose to build their careers with us are free to drive their own learning and development but we make sure they’re well-supported, with two formal opportunities each year to discuss their development needs and potential ‒ whether that’s in their current role, taking the next step up or moving across the organisation to try something new. There’s a lot of learning ‘on the job’, but we also offer people the chance to gain professional qualifications such as CII, CIPD and CIMA. We also provide in-house courses with specialist external facilitators on topics such as people management, personal impact and presentation skills.

Our employees are full of great ideas and we’re all ears

For employees to do their best, they must understand the business and their role in it. For this, communication is essential. We keep employees up-to-date with the business through formal briefings, team meetings, intranet bulletins and video conferences, as well as more informal means. Managers take these opportunities to listen to employees and involve them in the development of the business. Employees are kept up to date on company news and social events via events, email and our company intranet. We encourage our people to engage with professional bodies relevant to their roles to ensure we keep up with best practice such as the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Chartered Institute for Professional Development for people issues.

People policies and governance

In line with our values, Hiscox believes in the highest standards of corporate governance, while being in essence a non-bureaucratic organisation. We have an effective and firm system of internal controls that ensures we manage risks within acceptable limits, but not at the expense of innovation or speed of response. Continuing to get this balance right is one of our greatest strengths. Hiscox is committed to maintaining a culture of integrity, transparency and accountability to ensure compliance with all applicable anti-bribery and corruption laws. We expect our business partners, contractors, agents and joint ventures to uphold equivalent standards and may include explicit provisions in their selection process and contracts.

We want to build teams that are as diverse as the customers and communities we serve and create an environment where all our people can thrive.

We are committed to equality of opportunity. We recruit and promote people only on merit, regardless of race, gender, religion, marital status, sexuality, disability, nationality, socio-economic background or age. Hiscox complies with all relevant employment regulations of the countries where we operate.

As well as bringing transparency to the gender pay gap, this report also outlines what steps we are taking to support more women to reach senior positions at Hiscox.

Our health and safety policy is to provide across all Hiscox Group activities and locations, and in as far as is reasonably practicable, a work environment and work activities that together ensure the health, safety and welfare of all our employees and those who are affected by our operations.

If a material concern arises relating to the operations of the business, specifically including any incidences of corruption or bribery, employees are encouraged to use our confidential whistle-blowing service. We also subscribe to ‘Public Concern at Work’, which provides free legal advice to any employee with a concern about possible danger or malpractice in the workplace.

We respect and support the rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining and seek to meet international labour standards. We operate robust compliance procedures which are followed up by thorough investigation and disciplinary procedures, if required.
