Clementine (Visitor), 2023

In Clementine, an oversized jar protrudes from the wall, exposing glossy, syrupy contents resembling jam. The jar acts as both a vessel of containment and a register of time. By recalling the slow process of preserving and fermentation, the Clementine points to the tension between organic perishability and the industrial measures taken to extend and manipulate food’s shelf-life.

Magali Reus’s sculptures are assemblages of images and objects – she draws on the everyday things around her, recombining them into something strange and unfamiliar. Reus avoids using readymade objects, instead each element of her sculptures has been meticulously fabricated using a mixture of technological and traditional craft-based techniques. Colours, materials, textures, sizes, shapes are all manipulated, throwing normal associations into disarray, inviting the viewer to question the way objects may take on – or shed – meanings.
