Yto Barrada’s photographs, films, publications, installations and sculptures focus on the everyday life and landscape of Tangier, her hometown situated on the Strait of Gibraltar. Her practice is influenced by postcolonial thought and socio-political issues, and her interests range from the tension around borders, immigration, tourism and the urban landscape. The Snail was included in her first solo exhibition in London where she produced a body of work that examined the relationship between unchecked urban development, the botanical landscape, and the forms of resistance against the forces of monoculture. Yto Barrada will represent France at the 2026 Venice Biennale.
