Five good reasons to join our team in York

Hiscox York office atrium

Our hub in the north is already home to over 400 employees working in a range of roles including underwriting, claims, marketing, HR, finance, IT, and operations. If you’re thinking of applying for a graduate or intern role with us based in York, we can give you any number of reasons why it makes for a great move, but for here, we’ll just stick to five:

1. The City vibe

If you’ve not been here before, then you may not have succumbed to York’s charms as one of England’s finest historical cities. The Vikings loved it so much they never left. It takes 20 minutes to walk from York’s train station to the Hiscox office, but if you add another five minutes, you can make sure your walk takes in the medieval splendour of the place: the city walls, York Museum Gardens, the Shambles – labelled as the “best-preserved medieval street in Europe” and inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley – and of course, York Minster. York’s a great city to get lost in to find something new. There are rumours that there’s a different pub for every day of the year – we’re not sure about that but there is plenty to do and see, and you won’t be short of places to eat and drink either.

2. The York office vibe

So you’re persuaded by York the city, but what about Hiscox’s York office? You’ll find people there friendly and approachable - as someone in the office said, “The biggest problem in the York office is it takes too long to get anywhere because everyone says hello.” Everyone who comes to work here gets a warm welcome. Newly joined? As part of your induction box, you’ll get a ‘cheque book’ to spend in the office Art Café to treat you and a friend to tea, coffee and cake, and there’s a regular newsletter to tell you what’s going on in the office and around the City. Everyone here will do their best to help you settle in and feel at home (and not just because they’re angling to share your free cake and coffee).

3. A nice building too

Opened in 2015, our award-winning building has already made quite an impact in York. A “ribbon-like staircase in the centre of the building is modelled on York’s city wall” is what the designers say, and it takes you up to a stunning roof terrace that lets you drink in those beautiful York views in case you missed them on the way in. Everyone talks about the 12-metre-long decommissioned Soviet era rocket that sits poised in the centre of the atrium, pointing skywards to the full height of the four-storey building. Around it, there’s the café, meeting spaces, and reception. As it’s a Hiscox office you can expect to see some interesting art from our collection on show too.

4. Feelgood

A lot of work goes into looking after everyone’s physical and mental health. We have relationships with the local fitness centres to help to take care of the physical, while frequent team and individual fitness challenges and fundraising create a sense of team and well-being. In 2019 the office raised over £40,000 for local charities including Martin House Hospice Care for Children. In 2021, we’ve been getting behind York’s Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), supporting anyone experiencing or affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence.

5. Diversity and sustainability (a place where everyone should feel comfortable and at home, while we try and take care of the planet)

We want people from all walks of life to thrive here. We have a number of employee networks across the Group that employees can get involved in such as Pride and WeMind, our mental health and well-being network. The office performs well on its impact on the planet too as a carbon neutral workplace. There’s much more to do but we don’t just tick a box, we celebrate! We want to continually improve both the diversity and the sustainability of our York office.

That’s five good reasons to land here as a graduate or intern, and we think there are many more.
