Maid's Day Off, 2005

Cecily Brown’s sensual, gestural style is inspired by  a diverse range of sources, from the paintings of Wilhelm de Kooning and Francis Bacon, to pornographic magazines, comic books and Hollywood movies. There is a degree of turmoil and disturbance in Brown's work. The paint on her canvases roils with tension and frenzy as the viewer is gradually absorbed into the imagery.  In Maid’s Day Off, dense brushwork depict a domestic interior brimming with a kind of frantic energy, creating the sense of disorder evoked by the title.
