Tangier Deep Sleep (Keith Richards), 2009

Jim Lambie’s work is filled with references to popular culture, art history and music. Working with items immediately at hand, as well as those sourced in second-hand and hardware stores, he recreates record decks, speakers, clothing, accessories, doors and mirrors to make striking and colourful installations and sculptures. Music is an ongoing source of inspiration in Lambie’s practice. Tangier Deep Sleep features a poster of the legendary musician Keith Richards, obscured by a collage of cascading flowers. He appears as if he is floating in a sweet perfumed haze.

Jim Lambie has exhibited worldwide including at the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art; the Hara Museum, Tokyo; the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC. In 2003, he represented Scotland at the 50th Venice Biennale and in 2005, was nominated for the Turner Prize with an installation entitled Mental Oyster.
