Signatures (11), 2011

Erin Shirreff trained as a sculptor but now works in a range of media including film and photography. Her work blurs the boundaries between sculpture and photography, abstraction and representation, and references the work of modernist artists. In her Signature series, Shirreff photographed her own sculptures and printed half of two separate images side by side on a single sheet of paper. Together they suggest some imaginary third sculpture whose elements seem slightly amiss. Shirreff presents the photographs like the curled pages of an open book — both a photograph of sculpture and a sculpture of photography.
