Ada, 2012

Alex Katz in a celebrated figurative and landscape painter. Since the 1960s he has painted views from his home in New York City, the landscapes of Maine, where he spends the summer, as well as portraits of family members, friends, artists and writers. His paintings are characterized by their flatness, bold colours and clear use of line. Ada is a portrait of Katz’s wife and longtime muse: she has been the subject of over 1000 of his works. Painted here with her back towards the viewer and face slightly turned in profile, she is set against a white background with her silhouette haloed in a fine yellow tracing of paint.
