John Virtue is a British artist known for his monochrome drawings and paintings of London, Venice, and the seascapes around Norfolk. He creates expressive paintings using a mixture of shellac and ink that hover between figuration and abstraction. The artist has cited J.M.W. Turner and the Abstract Expressionists, particularly Franz Kline, as major influences on his work. Hiscox have been a longstanding patron of the artist and sponsored his residency at London’s National Gallery from 2003-2005.
