Moroccan Door, 1990-91

Howard Hodgkin was one of Britain’s most important painters and printmakers. His prints were of equal importance to him as his paintings and often related to memories and private experiences, without being overly illustrational. Moroccan Door was inspired by a trip Hodgkin made to Morocco in 1988. The printed image has been overlaid with hand-coloured marks, applied by a studio assistant, creating texture and depth similar to a painting.
