Hamilton, Bermuda (14 February, 2013) – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has awarded the Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) & Hiscox 11 & Under Celebrity Festival with its ‘Best Spirit of Cricket Initiative’.
Taking place every June, the BCB & Hiscox 11 & Under Celebrity Festival pits Bermudian youngsters against island celebrities such as leading lights from the business community as well as high profile government figures; the Governor of Bermuda, the Minister of Sports, and the US Consul General all having taken part in past festivals. Sponsored by Hiscox for the last four years, the festival is not only a celebration of youth cricket in Bermuda but also raises money for community development. Hiscox also sponsors the 11 & Under Cricket League which includes twenty teams across the island, including two all girl teams.
Commenting on the ICC award, Hiscox Bermuda’s CEO, Jeremy Pinchin, said: “This ICC award is well deserved recognition for an event that brilliantly brings the Bermudian community together; whether you’re the Governor of Bermuda, a Chief Exec of a reinsurance business, or an aspiring leg spin bowling ten year old, the 11 & Under Celebrity Festival is a great leveller! I’m delighted that the ICC has recognised the value of the festival both to Bermuda but also to the wider cricketing community and I’m looking forward to making my cricketing debut in the 2013 Festival later this year.”
The BCB’s President, Lloyd Fray, added, "We should recognise the major support and partnership that we have with Hiscox Bermuda. Since 2007 they have sponsored the 11 & Under league, our most popular league. The celebrity festival was the brain child of Hiscox’s Chief Underwriting Officer Rob Childs. Despite now living in the UK, Rob regularly flies back to enjoy this fun, family oriented community day. The event features a complete cross-section of the community and is now a major fixture in the domestic season. It is heartening to note that the 11 & Under All-Star team regularly thrashes the adults!"
The Best Spirit of Cricket Initiative is part of the ICC Development Programme Awards designed to recognise and celebrate some of the key achievements made by countries in the Americas region.
