Young Gladstone in the Rope Walk, 2006

Keith Coventry's Echoes of Albany reference the painter Walter Sickert's Echoes series, which were made in the 1930s and based on Victorian scenes taken from The Illustrated London News. Coventry once lived at Albany, an apartment block in Piccadilly that has housed many distinguished artists, including Lord Byron, Bruce Chatwin and the actor Terrance Stamp, as well as numerous politicians and scholars. This painting features the former Prime Minister William Gladstone. The Echoes of Albany paintings, rendered in muted pinks, white and reds, depict a bygone world through rose-tinted spectacles.
