Katherine Bernhardt creates bright, expressive paintings based on pop culture characters, food and consumer goods. Exploring the everyday iconography of contemporary culture, the artist riffs on similar patterns and motifs from E.T, to the Pink Panther, to shoes and showers. In a palette that ranges from restrained to vivid Day-Glow, Bernhardt paints the canvasses face up on her studio floor, using spray paint, puddles of thinned-out acrylic, and thick brushwork to emphasise her motifs. Her process is improvisational and loose, inviting accident and chance into her work.
